How I came about turning a old caravan into a playhouse for Bonnie was a result of a phone call! See hubby loves camping and I’m not a fan, I’m just not into it so when his dad called and said do you want our old caravan he said yes before even asking me 😂🙄…. ( This project was done over numerous months in different stages )
✖️It was very run down and not in the condition to be used for camping or traveling on the road. So it sat in our backyard, a bit of a eye sore and then I decided let’s turn it into a playhouse!
✖️I started by ripping everything out from inside and having a massive bonfire! 🔥
✖️I decided after having a fight with a ton of white paint that I would remove the old fridge and kitchen area, Bonnie couldn’t reach it so it was pointless as a play kitchen! The white paint I had already and I bought that from masters for $10.
✖️My next problem was the floor, what was I going to use! I looked up flooring options and they were all so expensive 😬 Then I had the idea of using timber pallets! I went to Bunnings and grabbed a heap of free timber pallets, I cut it all by hand and screwed it all into place 💪
✖️ I had a little bit of white paint left so I added water to the tin and then did a white wash over the floor to give it a rustic floor board look.
✖️ Next up was the outside! I bought a metal taubmans paint from bunnings which was the same colour as our house ( thin ice ), added timber around the windows , planted boxes and fake lights which I painted black!
✖️I had spare roofing and brackets from our house build so I made window covers to add some charm 😊
Inside:- ✖️ I made shelves out of the bottom of timber pallets which were free from Bunnings, the chalk board was timber I had already and I painted it with chalk board paint. The chalk board is actually covering up the old vent for the fridge! The pillows are from Kmart which I had already and the books I also already had from Bonnies inside playroom/ gifts from people.
✖️ Kitchen, pillows , flags and hanging mesh are all from Kmart.
✖️ The old vintage green desk is from gumtree for $70 🙌 I saw one in a shop for $270, once again gumtree comes to the rescue!
✖️ The blue feature wall is spare paint I already had and you can write on it with chalk even though it’s not chalk board paint 👌
Deck, swing set and slide:-
✖️ For Bonnies second birthday we built her a verandah, slide and swing set! We use to have free timber pallets as a temporary verandah while we saved up to build her new one! All the timber, swings and slide were all from Bunnings. The railing on the verandah is actually from free timber pallets found at Bunnings.
✖️ I also used chalk paint to make a board on the caravan where I can write messages for Bonnie 😊
✖️All up the caravan makeover, verandah, slide and swing set cost $630 🙌 plus the addition of $70 for the green gumtree desk total $700 …. by using decor items I already had, materials from around the house and free materials I was able to make this very affordable! When I was looking at play ground sets they ranged from $1500 – $5500, Im so glad we were given this caravan it has made a very special and unique impact in our backyard and given Bonnie a place to learn, explore and to be a child! We are going to run power to it and as she grows it will grow with her, sleep over parties, study zone and a teenage retreat!
